Mr. Jack Hartjes
Email Mr. Hartjes

Mr. Hartjes has been a teacher at SJAS for 20 years. He has taught 5th grade, Phy-Ed, and Computer. Mr. Hartjes has also been the Director of Religious Education in Great Falls, MT. He earned his degree at Catholic University and St. Cloud State University. Mr. Hartjes and his wife Mareleen have three adult children – Marit, Dominic, and Madeline; and two foster children – Dennis and Isaac. They have a dog named Chloe and a cat named Skyla. Mr. Hartjes enjoys going to their cabin in the woods, tennis, running, and writing. Mr. Hartjes has a published book: "Reading the Way We Talk: A Guide for Lectors".

About the Classroom

In the primary grades, the focus is on fitness and general motor skills with non-competitive activities and games where competition is downplayed. In the intermediate grades, the focus shifts to skills for specific sports. Competition is not stressed, but students do engage in competitive games.

Program for Kindergarten – 3rd grade includes:

  • Fitness exercises for strength and flexibility
  • Movements skills – slide, gallop, skip, walking backwards
    throwing and kicking skills
  • Balancing exercises
  • Gymnastics
  • Games include: soccer, scoop ball, pinball, beanbag games, bowling,
    parachute, shuffleboard, jump rope (grades 2-6), hopscotch, juggling,
    T-ball/softball, hula hoops, scooters

Program for 4th – 6th grade includes:

  • Soccer

Other Things to Know

Grades 1 – 6 participate in the President’s Fitness Challenge. Throughout the year, the students try to reach one of 2 goals in 5 events – curl-ups, shuttle run, V-sit, pushups/pull-ups, and mile run. The National goal is to be better than 50% of the children of the same age. The Presidential goal is to be better than 75% of children of the same age. Students receive awards at the end of the year for participation and goals reached.
